Module summary
This module will expose you to a range of different management techniques for the development of a GIS application in the workplace. You will develop a project idea that is relevant to your workplace (where possible), working through the whole life cycle from design through to planning.Objectives
On completion of the module students should:1. understand GIS project design and management, including implementation issues and problems
2. be able to identify:
- a potential application of GIS in their workplace (or imagined workplace), i.e. a specific problem(s), issue(s) or question(s) that needs solving or answering
- end-user needs and requirements
- appropriate data and software requirements
- human and organisational issues that need to be addressed in implementing GIS in the workplace
3. be able to critically evaluate their feasibility plan.
Skills outcomes
- Pursuit of knowledge in an in-depth, ordered and motivated way
- Learning and independent study
- Information processing (including IT skills): literature searches
- Data manipulation (including IT skills): analysis of data (especially spatial data); statistical methods
- Communication: written presentation; scientific writing
- Management: safe and effective project planning and execution; time management.
