Module summary
An introduction to the theory and practice of stage management and technical theatre, with a concentration on the role of the deputy stage manager and the preparation of a prompt copy for a live performance of a classic text.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to ...understand the roles and responsibilities of stage management personnel in the preparation, rehearsal and production of performance work;
respond creatively to the design and staging needs of a specified text and directorial brief;
demonstrate a broad understanding of types of theatre and staging formats
implement key stage management practices and procedures ;
work with a prompt copy and cue performance work with accuracy;
demonstrate an understanding of relevant employment legislation and union regulations ;
produce a range of documentation used by the stage management team in the preparation and operation of performance;
operate lighting and sound equipment to fulfil basic cue sequences.
Learning outcomes
Ability to work as a leader, and as part of a team;
To document and prepare the stage management and technical requirements of a live performance or event;
Undertake an analysis of a classic text (eg Anton Chekhov's 'The Seagull'), in relation to a defined directorial staging concept;
Knowledge of types of theatre, staging, design and different working practices in a variety of live performance contexts;
Knowledge of key regulations, agreements and procedures for live performance (e.g. Equity and ITC guidelines, Health and Safety regulations, Licensing, Copyright etc.);
Understanding of the theory and practical strategies of managing individuals in the creative sector;
Basic understanding of lighting, sound and the use of digital media in live performance;
Ability to construct and use a prompt copy for a live performance.

Indicative Content
The role of stage management, types of theatre and production, text analysis from the stage manager and director's point of view, understanding stage plans and scale, knowledge of profession of stage manager, prompt copy preparation and use; basic introduction to lighting, sound and digital media in live performance; examination of historical documentation of stage management and procedures; discussion of the relevant HR and union regulations for managing live performance; practical experience of operating and cueing live performance.

*NB practical sessions are taught in two groups of up to 25 each, with the group divided into two and the course tutor teaching both groups in succession.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Progress on the portfolio is discussed in the small group tutorial.Students are observed by the course tutor and technician in all practical sessions.
