Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

a) use the method of characteristics to solve first-order hyperbolic equations;
b) classify a second order PDE as elliptic, parabolic or hyperbolic;
c) use the method of separation of variables in various coordinate systems;
have a basic understanding of heat flow and wave motion.

Syllabus

First order equations: linear and quasi-linear; characteristics.
Second-order equations; classification and reduction to standard form; elliptic equations; maximum principles;
Diffusion equation; uniqueness, solutions in similarity variables.
Parabolic equations; separation of variables in different coordinate systems; the wave equation
