Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:(a) Describe consequences (such as the Taylor Proudman theorem) for the equations of motion for a rotating fluid;
(b) Calculate the flow in the classical Ekman boundary layer;
(c) Derive elementary consequences (such as Alfven's theorem) from the equations of magnetohydrodynamics;
(d) Solve the equations describing simple dynamo models.
Syllabus
(1) The governing equations of a rotating fluid.
(2) Ekman boundary layers.
(3) Rossby Waves.
(4) The governing equations of magnetohydrodynamics.
(5) Simple properties of these equations.
(6) Introduction to Dynamo theory.
Teaching methods
Lectures: 20 hours.
Examples classes: 9 hours
Methods of assessment
3 hour examination at end of semester (100%)
