Module summary

The study of Russian literature is one of the best means of coming to understand Russian society and the forces which shape that society. This module introduces you to three massively influential literary works of the twentieth century. The module is open to students in Levels 2 and 3; and there are no prerequisites. No knowledge of Russian language is required. Texts will be studied in English translation. Teaching will take the form of lectures and seminars.Assessment comprises one essay of approximately 1,500 words (50%) by the end of week 20, and a further essay of approximately 1,500 words (50%) by the last teaching Friday of the semester.

Objectives

To acquaint students with a small sample of works written by some of the masters of Russian prose.

Syllabus

Against a background of twentieth-century Russian literature and society, attention will be focused on examples of major fiction of the period.
