Module summaryThe module is open to students in Levels 2 and 3; and there are no prerequisites. The objective of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the profound significance of Alexander Solzhenitsyn for Russian culture and letters.Syllabus: Subject to availability of texts, students will study One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, Cancer Ward and a selection of Solzhenitsyn's political writings. There will be seminars on The Gulag Archipelago and a seminar on Solzhenitsyn's vision of post Soviet Russia.Teaching will take the form of seminars.Assessment comprises two essays of approximately 1,500 words, one by the end of week 7 and the other by the end of the semester (50% each).
ObjectivesOn completion of this module, students will be able to understand the profound significance of Alexander Solzhenitsyn for Russian culture and letters.
Subject to the availability of texts, students will study "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich", "Cancer Ward", "First Circle" and a selection of Solzhenitsyn's political writings. In the final part of the module, there will be seminars on "The Gulag Archipelago" and Solzhenitsyn's vision of post Soviet Russia.
Methods of assessment
Two essays (approximately 1500 words each ), each essay worth 50% of total mark.
