The qualifications to gain entrance to the MSc in Financial Mathematics are sufficient.This module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the principles underlying theory construction and hypothesis testing as well as to ensure their critical awareness of the potential and pitfalls of qualitative and quantitative research methods. The assessment will provide an outline of the student's dissertation project and a critical assessment of the proposed research strategy and methods.On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate a critical awareness of alternative research methods
- demonstrate an understanding of the different contexts for theory construction
- demonstrate an understanding of qualitative methods
- explain the potential and pitfalls of qualitative and quantitative research methods
- design a research project and write a research proposal
- locate relevant literature for a project
- evaluate research strategies, data collection and analysis methods in the context of a particular project
- demonstrate an understanding of principles and professional practice of research dissemination in financial mathematics
- explain the use of financial mathematics in business and decision making
Syllabus
Alternative research approaches, critical awareness of their potentials and pitfalls, formulation of a research problem and appreciation of different research methods, selection of appropriate analytical techniques, design of a research project and formulation of a research proposal with the aim to provide an outline of the dissertation.
