Objectives

To develop research skills and use of primary material through the study of a historical subject in depth.

Syllabus

Semester 1 will deal with the conquest of Southern Italy and Sicily by the Normans in the Eleventh Century, and the government of Southern Italy up to the creation of the Kingdom of Sicily in 1130. Semester 2 will cover the politics, government and society of the Sicilian Kingdom up to its conquest by Henry VI of Germany in 1194. Both semesters will include close discussion and study of the principal primary sources for the respective periods, as well as the art and architecture of the twelfth century.
