Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:
- handle and evaluate primary evidence and source material;
- show an informed understanding of the post-war transformation of modern Japan;
- be able to critically evaluate historical debates on the above.

Syllabus

This course looks at the politics and economics of Japanese expansionism during the period of imperialism and war 1930-45, and the process of reform and transformation during the years of American Occupation 1945-52. It pays particular attention to the period of transformation after the Second world war, drawing on primary sources from the American Occupation and Allied post-war surveys, and on steps taken to restructure Japan's society and economy following the War.
