Pre-requisites
At least 20 credits in level 2 in HPS or equivalent subject to the approval of the Chair of HPS Division as pre-requisite or co-requisite.Objectives
On completion of this module, students will be able to: i) articulate a detailed historical understanding of specific episodes in modern science and technology; ii) demonstrate advanced skills in the socio-historical analysis of science and technology; iii) to present an analytical critique of current historiographical interpretations of the subject.Syllabus
Detailed study of key developments in the institutional and industrial aspects of science in modern Europe: the emergence of scientific societies in the seventeenth century e.g. Royal Society, Academie des Sciences; instruments and technologies in the 'new' experimental natural philosophy, e.g. the air-pump; science at British and continental universities during the Enlightenment, science in the Industrial revolution; the formation of the British Association for the Advancement of Science; British imperialism and the development of telegraphy; the Great Exhibition of 1851 and its economic and educational aftermath.
