Syllabus

This module will introduce students to the ways in which architecture and material culture have been represented and interpreted by historians and cultural theorists from the first century B.C. to the present day. Texts considered include key writings by Vitruvius, Alberti, Locke, Hume, Foucault, Marx, Barthes, Bourdieu, Baudrillard, Derrida, Hegel and Kant. Students will be encouraged to explore the manner in which these methodologies have been deployed by architectural and cultural historians. The section on modernism and postmodernism introduces the student to the lively debates on-going within architectural theory and practice with regard to the history and periodisation of Early, High and Late modernism and those centering around deconstruction and postmodernism. The work of H. Russell Hitchcock, Le Corbusier , C. Abercrombie and others is compared to C. Jenck's and R. Venturi's typologies of styles in relation to the work of P. Eisenmann', D. Libeskind, Morphosis, OMA , Z. Hadid and others.
