Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- analyse a problem, understand its procedural aspects and render a solution as pseudocode;
- apply object-oriented thinking to the analysis of a problem and design of potential solutions;
- understand and modify existing programs;
- write small programs;
- understand and apply object-oriented concepts.
Syllabus
The computer as a problem-solving device; algorithms as recipes for solving a problem; use of pseudocode;
concept of a programming language; elements of a program: expressions, statements, selection, iteration, recursion; tracing the execution of a program; simple debugging techniques; coding style; objects as abstractions of real-world entities; concept of a class; objects as class instances; method calls; structure of a class definition; encapsulation; specifying fields, constructors and methods; documenting a class; introduction to unit testing; debugging a class; creating and manipulating collections of objects; using standard library facilities to create programs; data representation and file input/output; inheritance and object-oriented concepts; relationships between classes and objects; graphical notation for classes and objects.
