Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- understand relational database architecture and functions of a database management system;
- use SQL to create, maintain and extract information from a relational database;
- develop database applications to a specification;
- evaluate human computer interfaces;
- understand aspects of human-computer interaction that are central to 3D computer graphics;
- understand an overall architecture for graphics systems and the basic principles of modelling, rendering and interaction;
- create interactive graphics applications.

Syllabus

Databases: Relational database management systems; Normalisation; SQL.

Human computer interfaces: CGI scripts; usability; evaluation techniques; legal implications.

Fundamentals of 3D Graphics: rendering pipeline; modelling techniques; viewing and transformations; lighting and shading; animation. Human-computer-interaction: colour; interaction cost; desktop systems/computer games; navigation; object manipulation; evaluation. Practical implementation of graphics programs using APIs such as OpenGL. One or more advanced topics: visual effects; hardware architectures; GPUs; rendering algorithms; virtual reality; 3D graphics on the Web.
