Module summary
- Do you want a head start when you apply for summer or industrial year placement? - Want to increase your awareness of your own skills/interests and personal characteristics so that you can impress a future employer? - Do you want help deciding whether to go into industry or stay in academia? If so enrol onto Career Planning for Chemists. This is a practical and highly participative module with local employer involvement run by the University's Professional Careers Consultants. Assessments are continual, relevant and useful with no exams. - To do this module you don't need any previous experience or special skills. - To meet the learning outcomes no student will be permitted to join the module after the end of session 3.Objectives
On completion of this module, students will be able to develop a Career Action Plan detailing the steps to be taken during their time at university (and beyond) to enable career choice and implementation of that choice.In achieving this aim, students will develop the skills and knowledge to:
- identify the main occupations/courses of study entered by graduates;
- analyse the factors which are likely to affect their own effective career decision making;
- be aware of the importance of transferable skills in the workplace;
- consider how life at university helps in the development of transferable skills;
- relate their degree programme-based learning experiences to the acquisition of skills for employability;
- assess aspects of their own personality in relation to career choice;
- evaluate sources of careers information, particularly relating to vacation work;
- evaluate sources of career information relating specifically to subject-related occupations;
- prepare and present well structured presentations;
- draft and word process a Curriculum Vitae; draft and present application form for subject-specific post or profession.

Syllabus
This module aims to help students develop realistic career plans to work towards during their time at university and beyond.
Throughout the module we will use workshops and practical exercises to consider:
- the factors affecting decision making and how these relate to educational planning (eg module selection), career planning and life planning;
- the current employment market for graduates in general, and for chemistry graduates in particular;
- what skills employers are looking for, with particular reference to subject-specific occupations;
- recruitment and selection processes;
- how to develop relevant skills through your degree programme and other activities at university;
- how understanding yourself and what motivates you can help in career choice;
- how to make the most of any vacation or temporary work experience;
- how to collate and analyse all this information to make effective applications;
- issues of self presentation, both oral and written.
