SOEE1311 | Advanced Mathematics for Environmental and Geophysical Scien |
This module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate in depth mathematical knowledge of the following topics:1) Partial derivatives, including power, product, and chain rules.
2) Analysis of extrema (maxima, minima, etc) for functions of more than one variable.
3) Vector calculus, including divergence, curl, and gradient.
4) Solve basic partial differential equations.
5) Fourier Analysis.
Skills outcomes
Emphasis in this module is on numeracy.
Analysis of mathematical problems;
- recognising and using subject-specific theories, paradigms, concepts and principles to solve problems;
- application of theories to unfamiliar problems; and
- general refinement of mathematical logic.
Developing the skills necessary for self-managed and lifelong learning (e.g. working independently, time management and organisation skills).
Syllabus
1) Partial derivatives
2) Extrema for functions of more than one variable
3) Vector calculus
4) Partial differential equations
5) Fourier Analysis.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Example sheets with model solutions are provided at the start of each topic.Students study these as part of the learning process. Further examples sheets (not assessed) are provided for students to work on independently.
Assistance with these may be given at practical classes but solutions are only provided after the topic is completed.
