Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate critical understanding and skills in:
- appropriate techniques of analysis for a variety of educational research data;
- an appreciation of ontology, epistemology and ethical issues;
- the role and function of triangulation and mixed methods;
- reliability, validity and trustworthiness;
- the nature role and practice of evaluation and practitioner research in education.

Syllabus

This module builds on the skills, knowledge and understanding developed during the study of the prior module. Foundations of Educational Research I. The methodological and philosophical issues which were identified in the earlier module will be explored in more depth, as will the relationships between philosophy and method. There will also be a more specific focus on epistemology, ontology, research ethics and the so-called qualitative-quantitative debate, together with the benefits and difficulties encountered in combining approaches in multi-method and triangulation studies.
