Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate:

- effective management and analysis of textual and visual forms of data;
- effective management and analysis of numerical data sets;
- introductory understanding of the use of multivariate statistical procedures in educational research;
- how to build and test explanations and theories;
- how to integrate different forms of data into a single study.

Syllabus

This module builds on the skills, knowledge and understanding developed during Foundations of Educational Research I and II and represents the third compulsory module for the PGDip and MSc in Educational Research.

The aim of the module is to develop in greater depth students understanding of and capacity to manage and analyse numeric and non-numeric forms of data that were first encountered during 'Part 2'. This will involve exploring the potential and limitations of computer software such as NUD*IST and SPSS in more detail.

The second aim of the module is to introduce students to the process of using their analyses to build explanations and theories, as well as understand the crucial differences between these two modes of making sense of educational phenomena.

Also, students will have the opportunity to critically re-appraise and apply a number of philosophical and theoretical issues encountered during previous modules in light of this process.
