Objectives

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. express clearly the current issues and challenges of the design research community;
2. understand the characteristics of established methodologies and be able to evaluate their effectiveness for their own research;
3. develop their own approach to the formulation of design, research the selection and development of suitable conceptual and practical tools;
4. formulate and justify a design research project proposal.


Syllabus

This module will review current thinking on design research and will introduce a range of methodologies and methods which may be employed in the student's negotiated project. Social and ethical issues will be discussed and environmental responsibility will be emphasised, in particular the issue of sustainability.

Techniques for literature reviewing, questionnaire/survey design, interviewing and the application of qualitative research methods will be developed. Quantitative methods will be introduced and by the end of the module the student will have formulated the aims, objectives and proposed methodology for their particular negotiated project.

- 12 hours reading per lecture: 132 hours.
- 10 hours preparation per seminar: 30 hours.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The formative assessments consisting of 4 assignments along with the group tutorials will provide effective monitoring of the student progress.
