Objectives

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

- prepare, plan and execute an experimental/computing/theoretical or a dissertation project in Physics or a related discipline;
- design apparatus &/or software &/or critically appraise existing apparatus for physical measurements;
- be confident in report writing, small group presentations and in defending your work in a viva voce.

Learning outcomes
Execute and analyse the results of an experiment or investigation, evaluate the level of uncertainty in results and compare with theoretical predictions or published data;
Communicate in writing or orally the results of their work or other scientific information in a variety of styles or for different audiences;
Work autonomously within a structured environment.

Skills outcomes
- Planning and executing experimental/computing/theoretical/literary projects.
- Confidence in report writing, small group presenations and defending work in viva voce.


Syllabus

I) Experimental/Computing/Theoretical Projects:
Selection of project; literature search; laboratory work to carry out project; preparation of draft report; preparation of final report (approximately 5,000 words); oral presentation; viva voce.

II) Dissertations:
Selection of dissertation topic; literature search; literature analysis; preparation of draft report; preparation of final report (approximately 8,000 words); oral presentation; viva voce.

Note: Physics with Astrophysics and Physics with Nanotechnology students carry out projects in astrophysics and nanotechnology respectively.

Private study

This is an independent research module. Each project will vary according to the needs of the particular research question being addressed. Private study time will need to be allocation to;
- Report writing;
- Talk preparation;
- Viva voce preparation;.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

b- Weekly meetings with supervisor in Semester 1 and Semester 2 until Easter break
- Feedback on draft reports/talks from supervisor in Semesters 1 and 2.
