Objectives

The module introduces core skills and knowledge that are important for all the undergraduate programmes in the School of Design. In particular, the module is concerned with image manipulation (through the use of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator), image analysis (including the use of colour) and image semiotics.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate a familiarity with the basic properties of a digital image (including image capture, representation and output);
- demonstrate a familiarity with the relationship between RGB, CMYK and perceptual colour and issues of colour management;
- demonstrate a familiarity with some common ideas in colour coding and semiotics;
- demonstrate an awareness of the issues surrounding image ownership and the appropriate usage of digital images;
- have competence in the use of appropriate industry standard software packages to manipulates digital images.

Syllabus

This module is concerned with the properties, perception and usage of digital images in design. Lectures introduce the principles of image capture, representation and manipulation, along with the fundamentals of human vision and image and colour perception. The management of colour is discussed, and common themes in colour coding and semiotics introduced. A series of practical classes provide students with the opportunity to apply these ideas to their own design practice.

Private study

Private study will include:
- 25 hours: completion of practical exercises, submitted electronically prior to the next practical session
- 60 hours: reading for lectures
- 57 hours: development, preparation and visual presentation of project work
- 25 hours: examination revision.

- attendance at lectures and seminars
- regular submission of practical work
- an in-term multiple choice questionnaire.
