Module summary

The module is intended to prepare students for undergraduate degrees in dentistry and medicine by teaching the academic skills needed to be successful in these fields. The main emphasis is on the academic skills of reading, writing, research and critical thinking. These skills are taught through the context of specific professional, national and global issues in dentistry and medicine.

Objectives

This module is designed to prepare students with the necessary English language and academic study skills required for undergraduate study in dentistry and medicine. It provides training in how to produce written academic coursework; how to give oral presentations and participate effectively in seminars and tutorials appropriately in English; how to conduct short research exercises and think critically about sources; and how to access and use relevant University services. It also provides students with awareness of the conventions and vocabulary of academic English (both generic and subject-specific) and techniques for independent language learning.

Learning outcomes
It is expected that by the end of this module students should be able to:

• navigate and read authentic texts in the field of dentistry and medicine in English at a suitable rate
• annotate texts and take clear notes from annotations
• think critically about health-related texts and be able to evaluate their usefulness and relevance for written and oral work.
• select details in a lecture or presentation
• understand native speaker speech at regular speeds if not overly idiomatic and cope with regional dialect.
• conduct research using specific healthcare databases
• structure ideas coherently in an extended piece of written work, in a report.
• develop an argument supported with examples from multiple sources in a written assignment
• choose appropriate resources to answer an extended writing task, in a report.
• utilize reading and summarising skills to write an abstract for a conference programme
• refer appropriately to sources in-text and compile a reference list correctly
• write reflectively on their learning experiences
• actively participate in a seminar discussion using appropriate language for negotiation, decision-making, agreement/disagreement, and show an ability to listen actively and respond appropriately.
• successfully deliver a subject-specific presentation of up to 15 minutes and communicate ideas with minimal interference from grammatical and/or pronunciation errors
• select appropriate vocabulary for a task
• understand the conventions of academic style.

Students will develop academic study skills through the following topics related to dentistry and medicine:
• Cultural appropriacy and studying at Leeds
• Reliability of health evidence
• Good medical/dental practice and introduction to medical ethics
• Private and public healthcare systems
• Focus on the NHS crisis
• Global healthcare issues
• Researching a specific issue in dentistry/medicine

Private study

Private study tasks relate to the content of the course and the preparation of the assessed pieces of coursework. Students are expected to develop their academic skills through short projects related to dentistry and medicine and this will require regular private study.

Independent learning tasks are designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop their skills as independent learners and to develop their English language skills and academic study skills. Tutors can provide guidance when needed.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' progress is monitored on a continuous basis by each tutor through their participation in class activities and through the grading of assessed pieces of work. Students are provided with detailed feedback about each piece of work and are provided with an opportunity to attend regular 1:1 consultations with their tutors. For the written assignments, students are required to submit a draft version. The tutor provides feedback to the student about the draft. For the oral assessments, students will participate in a group presentation and practice seminar, for which they will receive formative feedback in preparation for their assessed individual presentation and seminar discussion.
