Module summary

This module allows students to take their analysis skills to a high level covering customisation of ArcGIS and how to build models of environmental or social systems for analysis and prediction. The module utilises Python and is suitable for anyone wishing to work in any spatial analysis position that requires more than 'out of the box' GIS knowledge. The module builds on Programming for Geographical Information Analysis: Core Skills, but is suitable for students with previous experience.

Objectives

On completion of the module students should have:
- To develop GIS customisation skills in students.
- To develop advanced programming skills in students.
- To develop advanced computer modelling skills in students.

Learning outcomes
- Advanced level computer programming for Geographical Information analysts, including GIS adaptation.
- How to build computer analysis and modelling tools for geographical data.
- An understanding of the major code libraries available for computer-based analysis.
- Insight into social and environmental modelling.

Private study

Students will be given structured practical work and will be expected to work on these projects independently between formal practical support sessions. Some topics will require additional reading around programming issues.

Students will also be expected to work independently on assessments which they will have the opportunity to design in discussion with staff.

The students will be supported through this work with VLE materials, including additional unassessed problems they might like to try and online learning materials, FAQs, and materials on ancillary and supporting topics.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Through weekly practical tasks

Students will have the option of designing their own projects in discussion with staff.

Students will have access to formative assessment materials and supplementary tasks online, including walk-through discussions of structuring the solution and the code that might be involved.
