Module summary

This is a compulsory module for the Audiology route of the BSc Healthcare Science programme. This module will provide the student with the knowledge and understanding of a range of common aspects related to audiological assessment and disorders.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to introduce the key audiological assessment techniques and the rationale for assessment strategies. Also to explore common audiological disorders and their influence on test results. By the end of the module students will have gained knowledge of the following:
Audiological assessment techniques
Routine and non-routine audiological disorders
Balance function and assessment techniques
The use of a test battery approach to aid the diagnosis of audiological disorders
Scientific writing skills

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Discuss the theoretical background and the practical application of a range of audiological assessment techniques
2. Differentiate the key features of a range of audiological disorders
3. Explain the fundamental principles of balance function and assessment
4. Discuss the developmental milestones in hearing from birth
5. Analyse findings from clinical laboratory based practical sessions
