Objectives
On completion of this module, students should:Specific objectives:
- be able to analyse products, identify and quantify their key properties;
- be able to recognise the key product attributes;
- have the ability to link physical attributes to product performance.
Teamwork:
- have experience of project based multidisciplinary team working.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, participants should be able to:
Creativity:
- build basic rate based models to describe the working of products;
- identify and access key knowledge associated with a product/problem.
Innovation:
- link theory and practice by applying conceptual tools for thinking;
- use conceptual knowledge to analyse case studies and learn by using analogical reasoning;
- apply knowledge in order to solve practical problems and formulate and implement innovation strategy.
Teamwork:
- work and learn in multi disciplinary teams;
- applied basic project and time management skills.
Skills outcomes
As part of this module the students will have the opportunity to learn a number of transferable skills which are key to the delivery of good outcomes.
These include:
- Critical evaluation of the literature, including literature search and retrieval;
- Methodologies associated with design and analysis during projects;
- Reasoning and problem solving;
- Experimenting and modelling and numerical solutions of the modules;
- Professional skills and attitudes;
- Teamwork;
- Keep an accurate, formal record of meetings and research performed; disseminate research results via development of communication skills.
Syllabus
Creativity:
Students will work in groups on a series of technology challenges ('Watching paint dry': what determines the rate?; 'Paper towels': How fast do paper towels absorb water?). Through a series of workshops, self learning and examples, students learn basic rate based modelling and solution techniques to help understand the dynamics of product application. The examples require the teams to design and execute simple laboratory work to build practical understanding that complements theory.
Teamwork:
Working with an academic mentor, operating as the project manager, small teams of CDT students (2 or 3) will be required to decide what information is needed, where they will access this (lectures/seminars/web/books/journals) and what empirical testing is needed to test or prove their hypotheses/answers.

Private study
Students will need to prepare for the various elements of the project, including background reading and literature reviews. The individual and team report will require preparation, a detailed literature review, explanation of experimental, modelling and data analysis work undertaken, results analysis and discussion and will include private study and independent learning from a variety of sources.Students will complete one VLE e-book (creativity) which will be assessed through coursework.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Working with an academic mentor, operating as the project manager, small teams of CDT students (3-5) will report weekly to discuss what information is needed, where they will access this (lectures/seminars/web/books/journals) and what empirical testing is needed to test or prove their hypotheses/answers. These meetings will be minuted by the students. The VLE diary provides a monitoring tool across the programme and will be discussed at quarterly meetings with senior CDT staff.Methods of assessment
