Module summary

The module aims to develop an understanding of whole life management on infrastructure assets. It analyses how infrastructure choices and strategies are developed over the life of physical assets. Project management concepts, tools and techniques are explored. The relationships between Project Delivery, Maintenance, Renewal and Disposal are analysed.

Objectives

The module aims to develop an understanding of the whole life management of infrastructure assets. It analyses how infrastructure choices and strategies are developed over the life of physical assets It introduces and explores the most common project and risk management concepts.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:

- Understand the process of whole life asset management (AHEP 4 Learning Outcome M7).
- Evaluate and apply of tools and techniques of physical asset management to develop a SAMP.
- Understanding of the most common project and risk management tools and techniques. (AHEP 4 Learning Outcome M15).
- Conduct whole-life risk assessments.
- A critical appreciation of the implications of whole life management concepts for delivering physical infrastructure assets. (AHEP 4 Learning Outcome M15).
- Analyse the relationship between risk, cost, value and performance in terms of whole –life infrastructure asset decision-making (AHEP 4 Learning Outcome M9).

This module contributes to AHEP learning outcomes; M7,M9,M15.

Skills outcomes
Academic:

a). The ability to plan time, prioritise tasks and organise academic and personal commitments effectively;

b). An ability to extract and evaluate pertinent data and to apply engineering analysis techniques in the solution of whole life management of infrastructure problems;

c). The ability to undertake an organisation contextual analysis using PESTEL and stakeholder analysis;

d). Develop a SAMP and produce plans for delivery, maintenance and disposal of assets;

e). Conduct LCC and CBA analysis for infrastructure elements;

f). Critically appraise the interaction between new assets, maintenance and disposal in decision-making;

g). Apply key project principles in relation to scope, time, cost and performance;

h). Undertake both project and whole-life risk assessments.

Digital:

i). The ability to find, evaluate, organise and share information across a variety of formats, ensuring the reliability and integrity both of the sources used;

j). The ability to use digital technology and techniques to create digital items, and the willingness to engage with new practices and perspectives to solve problems, make decisions and answer questions.

k). The ability to search for, evaluate and use appropriate and relevant information sources to help strengthen the quality of academic work and independent research.

o). The ability to take a logical approach to solving problems; resolving issues by tackling from different angles;

p). The ability to gather information from a range of sources, analyse, and interpret data to aid understanding and anticipate problems. To use reasoning and judgement to identify needs, make decisions, solve problems, and respond with actions.

- The concept of whole life management (WLM) and the asset life-cycle.
- The key components of asset management, SAMP, AMP, Implementation, Operations, Renewal and Disposal.
- Relationships between Capital Investment, Maintenance, Renewal and Disposal.
- Project Management Principles and the project life cycle.
- Risk Management Techniques.
- Asset Risk, Vulnerability and Criticality.
- Value and risk compromises in whole life management - OPEX and CAPEX considerations.
- The Asset Management process, tools and techniques for WLM. Life-cycle assessment and CBA.
- Technical and managerial issues in WLM - Introduction to ISO 55000 and related guidelines.

Private study

Private study includes researching a case for the assessment. A review of literature for preparation of the assessment. A critical appraisal of the chosen case. The writing of the final report.
