Module summary
This module is concerned with the history of the English language, with its contemporary variable state, and with stylistic analysis as a means of interpreting texts. Thus it will provide an introduction to the way in which the English language developed historically into a national and international form. It will introduce the study of contemporary variation in the use of English and its social significance. And it will give an introduction to stylistics as a method for the analysis of a range of literary and non-literary forms (e.g. plays, novels, poetry, news texts).Objectives
On completion of this module students will be familiar with an outline history of the English language; they will have an understanding of the relationship between Standard English and other dialects of English and the social significance of linguistic variation; and they will have acquired knowledge and practical skill in analysing a range of literary and non-literary texts (e.g. poetry, plays, novels, news texts and spoken discourse) using structural, stylistic and discourse analytic methods. Students will acquire basic terms and concepts relevant to the history of the English language, the study of linguistic variation, and the study of stylistics. And they will be able to apply their knowledge in the description and critical analysis of texts.Learning outcomes
Students will have developed:
