Pre-requisite qualifications
Academic entry requirements(i) An Upper Second Class or First Class undergraduate degree in a quantitative or scientific subject area with substantial mathematical, statistical or numeracy components; or
(ii) Two years (or more) experience in quantitative research; or
(iii) Successful completion of three or four years of a UK medical degree, within the upper 50% of the Year 3/4 cohort, for applicants who elect to undertake the MSc in Health Data Analytics as an intercalated programme.
English language requirements
An overall score of 7.0 on IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with at least 6.0 in writing and no other skill below 6.5. From a TOEFL paper-based test the requirement is a minimum score of 600, with 4.5 in the Test of Written English (TWE). From a TOEFL computer-based test the requirement is a minimum score of 250, with 4.5 TWE. From a TOEFL Internet-based test the requirement is a minimum score of 100, with 25 in the "Writing Skills" score.

Objectives
Students taking the research project module will learn the skills and knowledge to conduct research on a pertinent scientific problem in health data analytics, epidemiology and biostatistics.Working within one of the established research groups the module will allow students to experience the interdisciplinary nature of research. The knowledge and skills learnt within the didactic modules will be applied to a specific scientific problem. Students will have the opportunity to prepare an abstract and oral paper (i.e. seminar/conference presentation) of their research, and to write their research in the form of a manuscript (i.e. a research paper) submittable to a peer-reviewed academic or professional journal. Further evidence of each student’s work will be prepared as appendices to the research paper to provide a more in-depth account of the research undertaken, as required.
In preparation for the research paper, students will:
(i) conduct a literature review of their scientific problem and research topic;
(ii) prepare a research project proposal which considers both: their planned methodological approach; and consideration of relevant professional and ethical codes of practice, and of related governance and legal regulations; and
(iii) submit an abstract and present a short oral scientific paper (i.e. a seminar/conference presentation) summarising their research project.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. identify a specific, pertinent scientific problem in health data analytics, epidemiology and biostatistics, and formulate relevant aims and objectives for a research project to address this;
2. systematically undertake a critical review of the literature relating to an identified problem in health data analytics, epidemiology and biostatistics;
3. select and apply (and if necessary, develop or adapt) a range of appropriate research methods to investigate an identified problem in health data analytics, epidemiology and biostatistics;
4. design and write an appropriate protocol for conducting a research project, including consideration of relevant professional and ethical codes of practice, and of related governance and legal regulations;
5. execute a research project and collect data relevant to addressing the project’s aims and objectives;
6. analyse, present and interpret research project data appropriately;
7. write an abstract suitable for submission to an academic or professional conference outlining the conduct of and findings from a research project;
8. deliver a short oral scientific paper (i.e. a seminar/conference presentation) summarising a research project and defend the conduct and findings of a research project to peers and supervisors;
9. write a research project in the form of a manuscript (i.e. a research paper) that is submittable to a peer-reviewed academic or professional journal; and
10. conduct a research project in a collaborative, interdisciplinary fashion, in accordance with professional and ethical codes of practice and in line with governance and legal regulations.

This module forms a large core part of the programme. As such, considerable self-directed effort will be required from students. The assigned supervisor(s) will guide and advise students through the research process.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Regular (minimum of once every two weeks) 'face to face' contact with supervisor(s), in addition to e-mail, telephone and written communication.Submission of the ‘Literature review’ and ‘Project proposal with ethics’ assignments will alert the supervisor to students requiring further support.
