Module summary
This module will introduce you to one of the most commonly used GIS packages: ESRI's ArcGIS. You will learn how to use ArcGIS for mapping and spatial analysis of both vector and raster data. You will also learn about databases and how to access environmental and socio-economic data from a variety of different sources.Objectives
On completion of the module students should:1. understand the value of database systems and how to use them;
2. understand the basic spatial analytical functionality of a desktop PC-based GIS package such as ArcGIS;
3. have skills in using databases and GIS including data entry, manipulation, editing, analysis and mapping;
4. be able to work with vector and raster data.

Syllabus
- Using a customised database systems (e.g. WICID) to extract Census interaction data
- Using web-based systems such as CASWEB, UKBORDERS, DIGIMAP and NOMISWEB to extract various geographic and attribute data for use in a GIS
- Introduction to ArcGIS applications: ArcCatalog, ArcMap and Arc Toolbox
- Use of ArcMap for editing, display and production of cartographic output
- Use of ArcGIS for various analyses (spatial selection, spatial query, geocoding, buffering, overlay, aggregation)
- Use of Spatial Analyst for raster data manipulation
- Multi-criteria evaluation techniques.
