Module summary
This module will introduce you to one of the most commonly used GIS packages: ESRI's ArcGIS. You will learn how to use ArcGIS for mapping and spatial analysis of both vector and raster data. You will also learn about how to access environmental and socio-economic data from a variety of different sources.Objectives
The objectives of this module are to:- Train students in the use of a proprietary GIS;
- Introduce students to a variety of data sources and how to extract data from online databases
- Provide skills in data entry, manipulation, analysis and mapping and to be able to use the basic spatial analysis techniques included in proprietary GIS to solve geographical problems;
- Provide an appreciation of the differences between vector and raster models when used in application contexts.

Syllabus
Indicative topics could include:
- Using web-based systems to extract various geographic and attribute data for use in a GIS
- Introduction to ArcGIS applications: ArcCatalog, ArcMap and Arc Toolbox
- Use of ArcMap for editing, display and production of cartographic output
- Use of ArcGIS for various analyses (spatial selection, spatial query, geocoding, buffering, overlay, aggregation)
- Use of Spatial Analyst for raster data manipulation
- Multi-criteria evaluation techniques.
