Either: GEOG5022M (Professional & Personal Development) or basic programming experience

Module summary

This module skills students up to be able to demonstrate: - A detailed knowledge of the principles of web-based GIS; - A working knowledge and understanding of client side and server side technologies- How to set up a working custom GIS-based web client and server.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of a range of technologies used for web-based data storage, manipulation, visualisation and analysis
- Build a complete web-based GIS application based on a popular set of software components
- Demonstrate a set of transferable skills relating to web development and database management
- Demonstrate an awareness of web server management and security issues

- An understanding of server-side technologies including PHP and Postgres
- Understanding of JavaScript

Knowledge and Understanding
The theory and application of quantitative, visualisation and other spatial techniques across a wide range of geographical contexts.

Cognitive skills
Solving problems and making reasoned decisions.

Practical/professional skills
Plan, design, execute and report geographical research both individually and as part of a team;
Employ a variety of technical and laboratory-based methods for the analysis and presentation of spatial and environmental information (eg GIS, water chemistry, etc);
Collect, interpret and synthesise different types of quantitative and qualitative geographical data.

Key skills
Apply numerical and computational skills to geographical information;
Use information technology effectively (including use of spreadsheet, database and word processing programmes; Internet and e-mail);
Identify, retrieve, sort and exchange geographical information using a wide range of sources.
