Either GEOG5991 Programming for Geographical Information Analysis: Core Skills or experience in programming GIS

This module is mutually exclusive with

GEOG5870MWeb-based GIS

This module is not approved as an Elective

Module summary

This module skills students up to be able to demonstrate: - A detailed knowledge of the principles of web-based GIS; - A working knowledge and understanding of client side and server side technologies - How to set up a working custom GIS-based web client and server.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of a range of technologies used for web-based data storage, manipulation,
visualisation and analysis
- Build a complete web-based GIS application based on a popular set of software components
- Demonstrate a set of transferable skills relating to web development and database management

Learning outcomes
- An understanding of server-side technologies including PHP and Postgres
- Understanding of JavaScript
