Objectives
To enable students to acquire and develop the basic skills required for the study of history at undergraduate level and to introduce them to ideas and concepts of historiography.Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students will have developed:
A detailed understanding of the issues and arguments relating to a key historical event or problem.
A critical understanding of the approaches and methodologies of key historians writing on the subject.
An appreciation of the importance of historiography in the study of history.
An ability to synthesize information and opinion from secondary history texts to construct and present a reasoned argument in written and verbal form.
A firm grasp of the basic historical skills needed to study history at university (referencing, compiling bibliographies, critical reading, presentation, appropriate academic style, plagiarism awareness etc)
Syllabus
Students will read closely key historical writings relating to major historical event or problem in order to investigate the intellectual method and approach of the historian/s. They will explore historians’ use of evidence; the literary construction of history; the purposes and functions of history and the development of historiography. Students will also learn to read critically, use the English language correctly, develop good practice in the compilation of bibliographies and footnotes, develop effective approaches to studying and learning, make oral presentations, and design and write essays.
