Module summary

This module focuses on advancing knowledge of the immune system relevant to our understanding and treatment of human disease. The aim is to provide an in depth view of immune function with reference to infection, autoimmunity and cancer and how the immune system is exploited in prevention and treatment of major human diseases.

Objectives

To provide an in depth view of:
- Human immune function with reference to infection, autoimmunity and cancer
- How the immune system is exploited in prevention and treatment of major human diseases

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students will be able to:
- Demonstrate detailed knowledge and an advanced understanding of the immune system at the molecular, cellular and patient level;
- Evaluate current trends in immunological research and how these are applied to the understanding of human disease;
- Relate how knowledge of the immune system at a mechanistic level is translated into clinical research and practice;
- Apply appropriate forms of analyses to data from immunological experiments;
- Critically appraise recent scientific literature in the field of immunology and form independent views on areas of uncertainty or conflicting evidence.

- Strategies for the immunotherapy of cancer and autoimmune diseases

Guidelines
3hrs preparation per lecture (=45 hours)
3hrs preparation for each seminar, tutorial and journal club (=36 hours)
3 hrs write up for 2 selected clinician workshops (=6hrs)
Presentation (8 hours)
Practical- data analysis and write up (Journal style), 25 hours.
Literature review: 30 hours library based research/write up.
Total=150 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress will be monitored through contributions to tutorials, verbal presentations given by each student in the journal club sessions and a 1000 word report on two of the 5 clinician-led workshops (500 words each). Feedback will also be provided on the first draft of the literature review.
