Objectives
This module is designed to provide audiovisual translation students with experience in producing medium-length audiovisual translations (subtitles) of a professional standard from one language into English; it is also intended to increase participants' awareness of what the subtitling process involvesLearning outcomes
- Work independently to produce professional interlingual subtitles following agreed conventions
- Perform file conversion
- Critically comment on subtitles
- Identify target audience profile.
Syllabus
Students will be expected to produce subtitles for one clip of significant length, with a commentary. The specific clip to be subtitled will be chosen by the individual student, although subject to the agreement of his or her supervisor and the programme directors. For students offering two foreign languages, the choice of source language should be decided in consultation with the programme directors. In exceptional circumstances, students who are doing any module involving translation out of English (e.g. MODL5120M, MODL5212M etc) may elect to do the subtitling project out of English, subject to the approval of the programme directors.
