Module summary
Note: Before enrolling on this module, students must seek initial approval from the module leader, or an appropriate project supervisor. This module enables students to explore in depth an independently-formulated topic, drawing on the diverse range of interests of teaching staff within the School. The module complements the MA dissertation in terms of its emphasis on independent research, and in most cases the dissertation itself will provide the appropriate focus for such research. However, where appropriate, and through proper consultation, students may wish to pursue this module as a means to engage with areas of staff expertise that fall outside taught modules. Further details of the research expertise of members of the School can be found on the staff pages of the School’s web site: Through an initial consultation with an appropriate tutor within the School, students will formulate a project for research which will lead to an essay. As part of this initial consultation process the student must provide the following: 1. a proposal of circa 1,000 words 2. a comprehensive preliminary bibliography, demonstrating extensive research within the planned area of study (as a rough guide: 20-30 sources) 3. a provisional plan/timeline Failure to meet these criteria in a timely manner may prevent the student from taking the module. Note: Students wishing to complete this module must be prepared to take on responsibility for the formulation of their project, for the identification of appropriate and sufficient scholarly resources, and for making contact with an appropriate tutor with whom to develop their research.Objectives
Students undertaking this module will develop and advanced knowledge of a chosen field of research, and skills associated with engagement in a sustained and substantial programme of independent, self-directed research. Success in the module depends on both a clearly formulated project at the outset, and willingness and ability to develop this through independent study.Learning outcomes
1. The ability to identify, assess and deploy appropriate theoretical and methodological frameworks within a defined area of research
2. The ability to undertake sustained independent study towards a clearly defined goal outside the classroom-taught setting
3. The ability to conduct advanced-level independent research resulting in an in-depth knowledge of the chosen topic
4. The development of a substantial and coherent written argument commensurate with professional practice in Art History and related disciplines
Syllabus
Module content is determined by the student’s pro-active formulation of an appropriate topic of research, independently and through discussion with a tutor. The project is determined by and developed through formal individual supervision based on the student’s independent research on their chosen topic.

Private study
This module foregrounds independent study, and is intended for students who have both a very clear idea of the project of research they wish to undertake, and the confidence to work in a self-directed, sustained, and self-reliant manner with a clear focus on a single topic. Though the project will be supported by supervisions at defined points in the semester, students undertaking this module will need to demonstrate an ability and willingness to undertake a significant amount of independent study, i.e. beyond that built in to classroom-taught modules. As a guide, students taking this module should bear in mind that the expectations in terms of advanced knowledge of their chosen topic will be equivalent to the expectations in modules that are taught in a structured classroom situation over the course of a semester.An example breakdown of private study arrangements would be: reading and research 125 hours; essay preparation and writing 170 hours.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Formative feedback is provided via individual supervisions distributed at intervals across the semester. Exact timing will be agreed between the student and supervisor as appropriate to individual projects. Formative feedback will address firstly the initial project outline, and then the student’s development and presentation of the project in supervisions.Methods of assessment
