Objectives

On completion of this module students will present a 7,500-9,000 word dissertation showing a clear understanding of the notions of archive, reading and argumentation relevant to a theoretical investigation within contemporary fine art practice. The dissertation should indicate an awareness of the context of the student’s own individual/collaborative art practice and its critical framework.

Learning outcomes
The student should be able to undertake a work of independent research and scholarship, frame relevant and significant questions, constitute an archive through which to undertake research and analysis, and produce a substantial piece of writing or practical work that conforms to expected levels of academic performance, presentation, grammar and analysis.

Skills outcomes
- Skills necessary to undertake higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in an area of professional practice.

- Co-ordination and dissemination of a range of contextual visual information.

- Using bibliographies and databases.

Syllabus

Prior to this module, students will have undertaken the pre-requisite module 'Advanced Research Skills 1 – ARTF5101M' which highlights methods for locating sources and resources, referencing, effective time management, and the construction of research strategies, and the co-requisite 'Advanced Research Skills 2 – ARTF5102M' which prepares students for the undertaking and managing of a post-graduate dissertation/studio project; locate sources and resources; manage time effectively; prepare and deliver oral presentations; construct research strategies.

This module places its emphasis on the development of the skills of independent study, research, self-appraisal and sustained argument. Topics of research will be negotiated between the module leader and the individual student through individual tutorials.

Students will participate in the MA Symposium where initial ideas and outline of research areas will be presented and discussed.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance at and participation in:
- Group presentations in preparation for MA symposium;
- Presentation of dissertation project at the MA symposium at the end of semester 2 and feedback from this presentation;
- Individual tutorials.
