Objectives
Overall the module is aimed at providing a "bridge" between academic study and a working environment, equipping the student with industry experience to allow them to progress seamlessly into the working world. Where judged suitable by the module tutor a student may instead submit for assessment an essay on a negotiated topic relevant to the respective industry or industries covered by their degree programme.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to
- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the professional processes in which the student has been involved during the period of work placement.
- Critically evaluate this experience through analysis and self-reflection.
- Work autonomously and in teams, according to a given brief or remit within a structured industry environment.
- Apply the range of skills, competencies and critical thinking acquired during the placement period
- Assess the student's individual contribution and that of the company/organisation where placed within the broader context of the media industry as a whole.
Syllabus
This module aims to give students approximately one month's assessed practical experience at a company or organisation within the media or media related industries.
During the course of their work placement they are expected to appreciate the practical demands of a working environment and to critically evaluate their experience. In this period they will develop and apply the skills and concepts they have studied during the course of their respective degree programmes as well as reflecting on the qualities necessary to develop and progress in a professional environment.
Each student's experience will depend on the project(s) in which they are involved, their specific role(s) and the organisation or company where they work. They will, however, be involved in the development, implementation and execution of professional projects and productions in a variety of junior capacities; they will learn to work under pressure in order to meet industry deadlines, they will also be required to demonstrate the intellectual and practical capabilities they have acquired at the University within the professional industry environment and under the scrutiny of working professionals. This will enable them to become a reflective practitioner within their chosen field.

A report (based upon a questionnaire issued by the School) by the placement provider, outlining the context of the student's work and offering a professional judgement on the student's performance in their specific working environment.
