Module summary
This module is a course of advanced language skills, which provides students with the opportunity to improve their Chinese linguistic competence through listening comprehension, interpersonal communication, discourse interpretation and newspaper readings. It will broaden students' thematic vocabulary and improve their linguistic sense in accordance with various topical and stylistic and context.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to listen and understand normal spoken Chinese, to speak Chinese more fluently and naturally, and to comprehend general media sources, both audio and written.Skills outcomes
Improved skills of listening comprehension, interpersonal communication, discourse interpretation, media-related vocabulary and newspaper comprehension.
Syllabus
The course seeks to develop listening comprehension, interpersonal communication, interpretation and newspaper reading skills:
1. Listening comprehension will be developed through use of audio and audio visual materials.
2. Interpersonal communication will be developed through prepared group discussion of specific topics, covering daily life matters, social issues, and current news. Based on these topics, interpreting will require the preparation by students of spoken Chinese-English and English-Chinese language exchanges.
3. Newspaper reading will cover current Chinese journalistic discourses, mainly news report. The students' reading competence and vocabulary will be improved through reading contemporary Chinese journalistic texts and translating the gist of these into English.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
1. For listening and conversation, students will have opportunities to listen to DVD programs and to watch films under tutor's guidance or by themselves. The conversational practice will include structured presentations, for which feedback will be provided both from peers and from the tutor, free conversation and interpretation. For listening there will be tests at the end of each semester, and the test for conversation will be held at the end of the second semester.2. For newspaper reading, students will have reading and translation class work and homework. There will be one piece of homework during Weeks 6 - 8 (first semester) for which tutors will provide written feedback.
