Module summary

This module will introduce you to GIS in urban, regional and national planning. We will cover the main sources of data, emerging data standards and the latest e-government initiatives. You will also be exposed to a range of GIS applications such as planning for education, transport, health provision and emergency planning

Objectives

On completion of the module students you should be able to demonstrate:
- an awareness of key information sources;
- an understanding of the development and application of GIS and modelling;
- methods in urban and regional research;
- skills in how to extract data from key sources and use relevant computer software for research and data analysis;
- skills in how to develop and implement GIS projects within a range of applied contexts

Learning outcomes
- An appreciation of the role of GIS in a range of applied planning contexts.
- An awareness of the range of spatial data services available to support the plannning context.
- Experience of GIS based analysis in one or more of the relevant planning contexts.
- The ability to communicate independent research findings in formats appropriate to stakeholders in the planning sphere.

- Pursuit of knowledge in an in-depth, ordered and motivated way;

- information processing (including IT skills): literature searches;
- data manipulation (including IT skills): analysis of data (especially spatial data); statistical methods;
