Objectives
- To provide students with an understanding of the Life Course in contemporary UK and other societies- To explain the social model of disability and the application of this model to social work
- To explain an understanding of the social processes that lead to some people in society being disadvantaged and socially excluded
- To understand service user and carer experiences and perspectives
- To discuss how social workers address disadvantage and social exclusion in practice
Learning outcomes
Students will:
1. Understand the socially constructed nature of divisions in the life course based on age and human development
2. Be aware of the importance of explanations of diversity and difference in UK and other societies
3. Apply the social model of disability and a range of social as opposed to biological explanations to human behaviour
4. Be aware of and be able to explain the impact of oppression and exclusion on peoples' life chances and personal identities
5. Understand the importance of an anti-discriminatory and the socially inclusive model of social work practice and the issues of self-determination and the greater good.
6. Understand the ways on which society makes provision for disability through social work services and the impact of these on service users and carers

Syllabus
- The social, historical and cultural construction of age-based categories in the life course so that age can be seen as a form of social division. The major life course phases of childhood, youth, adulthood and old age will be analysed in this way
- Social models of disability, mental health, ethnicity, gender and sexuality. The focus will be on the ways our society can disable and exclude certain people who do not fit cultural norms and expectations.
- Theories of anti-discriminatory practice, social justice, Kantian and Utilitarian approaches, partnership, citizenship and empowerment and their importance to social work's knowledge, skill and value bases.
- The practice of social work with disability including physical and learning disability.
- The service user and carer movement voice in disability and it's implications for practice
- The provision of services to adults in disability including Fair Access to Care and Direct Payments
- Delivering services to children
- Communication skills in working with disability including learning disability
