Module summary

The conventional two dimension plane showed in most of the remote sensing images neglect the 3D space of the real world. As of 3D visualization techniques become more common, visualization processing on the basis of remote sensing technique not only ensures the realization of real-time 3D visualization, but also is better for the interpretation of remote sensing images. There is a pressing need to develop robust techniques to derive detailed and accurate digital elevation models based on rapidly growing civilian spaceborne systems for example, Cartosat-1 and ALOS/PRISM. The combination of lectures and real world examples based practical experience will provide students with relevant training in one of the emerging field in the geo-information science.

Objectives

Aims of this unit are to:
- introduce three dimensional remote sensing techniques and contemporary methods of deriving topographic information from three dimensional remote sensing and photogrammetric data;
- provide students with practical experience and training of interpreting and processing three dimensional remotely sensed data.

Learning outcomes
1. The key concepts and terminology used in 3D remote sensing.
2. Different sources of 3D remote sensing data (Stereo aerial photograph and satellite data, terrestrial and airborne laser scanner).
3. The methods of deriving topographical information from aerial photographs and remote sensing imageries.
4. Relevant areas and examples where 3D remote sensing data can be applied.

Skills outcomes
Students will be able to:
1. Critically analyse literature on the principles underlying and technological developments in 3D remote sensing
2. Analyse and interpret 3D remotely sensed data
3. Conduct laboratory based analyses of 3D remotely sensed data (Primary using GRASS-6.4.0), collected from different sources, in an appropriate and safe manner
4. Use appropriate techniques to produce analytical products such as Digital elevation models(DEM), Digital terrain model (DTM) etc.
5. Pursue knowledge in an ordered way
6. Produce fluent and comprehensive written reports on complex topics
7. Use computational skills in the analysis of three dimensional terrain models.
