Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- describe and locate anatomical positions and directional terms, planes, sections and cavities
- demonstrate an awareness of the layers of structural organisation in the human body
- describe the gross anatomy and physiology of whole body systems (including the Musculoskeletal, nervous, cardiovascular, renal, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems)
- suggest common histological techniques and recognise the structure of common tissue
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this module, students will have engaged in independent learning and be able to:
1. Use appropriate terminology to describe anatomical positions, movements, planes, sections and cavities
2. Discuss layers of structural organisation of the human body, and have an awareness of how this relates to function
3. Describe whole body systems (including the musculoskeletal, nervous, cardiovascular, renal, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems) in terms of anatomy and physiology
4. Discuss histological techniques that relate to common tissues and describe the structures observed
5. In a small group, apply the above and write an SOP (standard operating procedure) to characterise an organ system
Upon successful completion of this module the following UK-SPEC learning outcome descriptors are satisfied:
A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles and methodology necessary to underpin medical engineering, and an understanding and know-how of the scientific principles of related disciplines, to enable appreciation of the scientific and engineering context, and to support their understanding of relevant historical, current and future developments and technologies (SM1m)
Ability to apply and integrate knowledge and understanding of other engineering disciplines to support study of study of medical engineering and the ability to evaluate them critically and to apply them effectively (SM3m)
Understanding of concepts relevant to the discipline, some from outside engineering, and the ability to evaluate them critically and to apply them effectively in medical engineering projects (SM6m)
Knowledge of characteristics of particular equipment, processes or products, with extensive knowledge and understanding of a wide range of engineering materials and components (P2m)

Exercise initiative and personal responsibility, which may be as a team member or leader (G4)
Syllabus
Using on-line learning resources, with 3D graphics, interactive tools and online learning quiz’s, students will be encouraged to learn independently in the following areas:
- Directional terms, plans, sections and cavities of the human body will be described
- An overview of a body plan and organisation
- Gross anatomy and physiology of the major systems will be outlined
- Tissue structures will be considered at a macro- and micro-scale
In small groups students will then take part in a practical session where they will dissect and charcterise an organ system, they will need to describe this in a detailed SOP (standard operating procedure)

Private study
Students will use directed online resources (e.g. Anatomy and Physiology, Primal pictures) and will be guided on modules to study.On-line quizzes and short answer questions will be set up on the VLE for students to submit at regular intervals to enable monitoring of engagement and performance.
Private study relates to the compilation of a group report relating to the practical session.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
An online discussion board will be monitored during specified times each week.Online quizzes undertaken during live tutorial slots and following asynchronous anatomy.tv materials
