Objectives
On completion of this module students will be able to make use of the University and School computing resources including:1. Appropriate statistical and computer based drawing packages.
2. Understanding concepts of data analysis relevant to their degree programme (eg statistical analysis of geological data).
3. Obtaining and processing digital spatial data, creating and using spatial data in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) applications.
Students must pass the assessment in both the statistics and data analysis component, and the graphics and spatial data component in order to pass the module overall. Students who have not successfully passed the required exams/assessments will have to resit these in order to pass the module.
Syllabus
- Statistical packages;
- Introduction to geological data analysis;
- Types of data (univariate statistics, probability and hypothesis testing, temporal and spatial statistics);
- Computer based drawing; obtaining spatial data (eg Digimap), Geographic Information Systems: displaying and analysing data from external sources and from student fieldwork.
