Objectives
To equip students with the knowledge, academic & personal skills required for effective study at degree level.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will have knowledge of:
1. Theories of Learning
2. Critical thinking, analysis and reflection
3. The nature and purpose of different degree programmes which are relevant to their aspirations to further study
4. Effective strategies for learning, time management, academic reading, research, academic writing and verbal presentations
5. The Harvard referencing system
6. Blackboard
Skills outcomes
By the end of the module students will be able to:
1. Locate and select relevant academic information and use a range of retrieval systems including libraries and online research resources.
2. Utilise effective academic reading, note taking and writing stratagies.
3. Make appropriate and judicious use of online resources for study including the University's VLE.
4. Demonstrate an independent and critical mode of thinking.
5. Reflect on own learning.
6. Write and present a well structured and coherent argument using academic conventions including references and bibliographies.
7. Create presentations and word processed documents of an academic standard.
