Objectives

On completion of this module, students should have gained an appreciation of several of the more significant recent changes in the fields of concrete technology and cement-based composites arising from:
(a) introduction of new materials;
(b) development of new techniques;
(c) concerns regarding durability;
(d) increasing emphasis on sustainability.

They should also understand the importance of research, development and pre-standardization activities in promoting innovations within the construction industry, recognizing barriers that are associated with the long expected service-lifetimes of most structures and components and the serious consequences of premature failure.

Syllabus

- Developments in cementitious binders incorporating slag, fly ash, silica fume and metakaolin
- Calcium aluminate cements
- Concrete admixtures
- Nature of high performance concrete
- Production and application of secondary aggregates from wastes
- Mechanisms of degradation of reinforced concrete including corrosion, alkali-aggregate reaction and sulfate attack
- Non-destructive testing techniques and their applications to management of concrete structures.

Non-structural (intrinsic) cracking in concrete - a review of the different types of cracks, their causes, the consequences of, and ways of minimizing their occurrence. Selected examples of current research areas.
