Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- manipulate complex numbers in Cartesian and polar form, interpret them on an Argand diagram; and solve simple equations involving complex numbers;
- solve simple first order differential equations;
- solve simple second order linear differential equations.

Syllabus

- Complex numbers: definition, Argand Diagram, polar form, De Moivre's Theorem, finding complex roots of polynomial equations with real coefficients.
- 1st Order Ordinary Differential Equations: separable, exact, linear, homogeneous.
- 2nd Order Ordinary Differential Equations: linear homogeneous equations with constant coefficients.
- Linear inhomogeneous equations, with exponential, sinusoidal, and polynomial right-hand sides.
- Euler equations.
- Series solutions.
- Simple mathematical modelling of engineering applications using differential equations.
