Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to examine all aspects of job planning and implementation from feasibility, through design to a final report.

Learning outcomes
Aims
The aim of this project is that the student:
- researches, analyses and synthesizes a broad set of requirements in order to develop a design solution;
- demonstrates the structural integrity of that design solution;
- presents the work in a clear and objective manner at various stages in its development, demonstrating communication skills and the ability to work singly and as part of a team.

Objective
The objective of this project is that the student:
- can demonstrate an ability to design a building structure;
- research and learn from architectural and engineering precedents;
- develop and respond to a site strategy; to arrange a series of relatively simple internal spaces;
- show the appropriateness of the structural solution;
- work successfully as an individual and in a team situation;
- present the results to the class in a clear and direct manner.

Syllabus

Students undertake a pre-set design project relating to the design of buildings in the environment.
- These include an element of research, i.e. building type study, briefing and environmental impact.
- Projects progress through stages of preliminary assessment, feasibility (research) and on to final design, depending on the project.
- Designs take into account the site conditions; the social and environmental context; construction methods with particular regard to health and safety risk management.

Projects are supervised on a one-to-one and group basis and assessment is by written report and by verbal/visual presentation.
