Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to understand:- how data and program instructions are represented on modern computer systems;
- the von Neumann architecture;
- the role of the operating system;
- networking concepts, protocols, techniques and technologies;
- Web technologies and techniques.
Syllabus
The von Neumann architecture and the role of the operating system, internal data representation, ALU, IO, memory, caching, disk storage and file systems, processes and CPU scheduling, buses, interconnects and interrupts, the fetch-execute cycle, mobile operating systems.
Networking: 4-layer approach, physical comms, cabling, wireless, LANs, MANs, WANs, ethernet protocol, networking devices.
Client server model.
Web: HTTP, HTML, servers, browsers, Web-based applications.
