Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to ...- reason about the significance of the new directions that distributed systems are taking;
- identify the paradigms that determine the requirements, capabilities and performance of advanced distributed systems;
- design a high-level framework of a distributed system based on the Internet architecture/advanced architectures such as Grids/Clouds;
- use a range of middleware tools to implement an advanced distributed design;
- show an appreciation of future trends in distributed systems.
Syllabus
Application challenges: mobile systems; sensor networks; ubiquitous/pervasive computing; peer-to-peer computing; overlay networks; mobile networks; distributed data mining.
System challenges: communication mechanisms; processes; naming synchronization; data storage and access; consistency and replication; fault-tolerance; security.
Coupling: platform; temporal and spatial; bus and broker architecture styles; review of Web services; service oriented architectures (SOA); SOA building blocks; software as a service.
Utility computing: on-demand computing; Grid computing; Cloud computing; Autonomic computing; case studies.
