Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the architecture of the Semantic Web;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge representation formalisms in use in the Semantic Web;
- Demonstrate knowledge of ontology engineering principles;
- Demonstrate knowledge of existing applications of semantic web technologies;
- Use common Semantic Web tools to apply semantic web technologies;
- Reason about the significance of semantic technologies and the directions in which the field is going to develop.

Learning outcomes
1. Familiarity with semantic web toold and techniques.
2. Practical experience of applying semantic technologies in specific contexts.
3. Experience and understanding of knowledge-enhanced web systems.

Skills outcomes
Knowledge modelling and coding.
Semantic augmentation.
Semantic queries with SPAQL.
USe of intelligent tools.


Syllabus

Knowledge and data formalisms; ontology engineering; semantic enrichment and retrieval.

Applications including linked data, semantic data browsers, smart social spaces (e.g. semantic wikis, semantic blogs, social networking).

There will be a practical component with hands-on experience on applying semantic web technologies in a specific domain
(e.g. decision making, learning, health, e-business, digital libraries).
